Phoenix police release body cam video of shooting that left stabbing suspect dead

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department released body cam video of an officer-involved shooting that left a stabbing suspect dead on December 16, 2023.

Phoenix Police said the shooting happened near 50th Street and McDowell Road at around 2pm on Dec. 16.

Sgt. Melissa Soliz said the suspect died from his shooting injuries. The suspect has been identified as 37-year-old Alton Tungovia.

She said several people called 911 about a man who’d been stabbed near a business at 44th Street and McDowell Road.

Officers spotted the suspect near 49th Street walking in and out of traffic and holding an object in his hands.

Video shows that police gave commands to the suspect to put his hands up, but the suspect kept walking while shouting back at the officers.

After continuing to not comply with police orders, an officer shot the suspect. Just before, another officer fired a PepperBall launcher as well.

The suspect was transported to the hospital for treatment where he died.

The initial stabbing victim was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the release, conclusions about whether the officer’s actions comply with policy will not be made until all facts are known and an internal investigation is complete.
