Police release bodycam video of shooting that left Stanley Howard dead in Phoenix

Phoenix Police released new body camera video Thursday of the officer-involved shooting that left Stanley Howard dead earlier this month.

Police say the incident started when Howard called 911 on the night of July 8 — and requested police officers respond to his residence.

Officers arrived at his home at around 8:20pm. When they contacted him, he was uncooperative and broke a window, cutting his hand in the process.

In the video, Howard can be heard swearing at officers from inside his house, and tells them to leave. After the officers left, Howard called 911 again.

Officers returned to his home to offer medical aid for his injured hand. But Howard remained uncooperative and the officers left.

Police say Howard called 911 thirteen more times over the next 45 minutes.

At about 9:10pm, Phoenix Fire personnel were dispatched to Howards home to provide medical assistance — but requested Phoenix Police made contact with him first to ensure the safety of the staff — following the statements Howard made during the 911 calls.

Officers responded to Howard’s residence for the third time at around 9:15pm.

During this contact, Howard told the officers he had a gun, and produced an object resembling a handgun at them — prompting the officers to open fire.

He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The object was later determined to be a water gun.

The investigation remains ongoing.
