COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Police have released body camera and security footage from a July 5 officer-involved shooting that left 26-year-old Alex Martinez-Sarmiento dead in the city’s downtown.
Officers responded around 1:30 a.m. to reports of a disturbance involving an armed man near Pikes Peak and Tejon during a busy night. When officers arrived and tried to contact the suspect, he reportedly ran and reached into his waistband. One officer then fired, fatally shooting him.
Police said they used the department’s Real-Time Crime Center (RTCC) to identify Martinez-Sarmiento and track his movements earlier in the evening. Security video showed him allegedly involved in a group disturbance before the shooting.
Authorities believe Martinez-Sarmiento had a handgun, which they say he tucked into his waistband and reached for as he fled. The investigation remains ongoing.
