Reno police release bodycam video of officer-involved shooting on Wells Avenue Bridge

NEVADA — Police in Reno released body camera footage showing officers fatally shooting a man during a confrontation on the Wells Avenue Bridge earlier this month.

The incident happened February 3 when officers responded shortly before 4 p.m. after multiple callers reported a man, identified as 27-year-old Michael J. Johnson, standing in the roadway and possibly in crisis. Officers stopped traffic in both directions and attempted to talk him off the bridge while waiting for crisis response teams to arrive.

According to police, officers spoke with Johnson for about 15 minutes and repeatedly asked him to remove his hands from his pockets and drop a suspected knife. Video shows Johnson moving toward officers and refusing commands. At one point, he warned officers not to approach from behind.

Bodycam footage shows Johnson suddenly pulling a long chain from his jacket, running toward an officer and swinging it. An officer then fired multiple shots, striking Johnson.

Officers secured the chain and began providing first aid until medical personnel arrived. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner later confirmed he had been shot multiple times.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
