Shots fired as CHP sergeant responds to street takeover

Dramatic video shows a person opening fire on a California Highway Patrol vehicle during a street takeover in Compton early Monday morning.

However, CHP now says the video is “misleading,” and the vehicle did not come under fire.

The incident happened at the intersection of Rosecrans and Atlantic avenues.

Footage shows a man running at the CHP vehicle with something in his hand as bystanders watched from just a few yards away. Shots are heard on the video, and the CHP driver quickly speeds away.

In a statement Monday afternoon, CHP insisted the driver of the patrol vehicle, a sergeant, was not in danger.

“The sergeant was the only unit in the area at the time, and two to three spectators ran toward his patrol vehicle holding their cell phones,” CHP explained. “He only heard the shots, which came from somewhere east of his location.”

It was unclear who, if anyone, was targeted by the gunfire. CHP said the sergeant was unharmed and said he sped away to “avoid escalating the situation.”

“The sergeant related no one shot at him, as he did not see any shots being fired,” the statement read.
