PEORIA, Ill. — An officer was yelling “get your hands up” as several shots could be heard on video taken by body camera footage from a Feb. 6 incident where a man was shot after allegedly threatening officers with a gun.
Ryan Aeron Stanley Hurst, 18, is facing charges in McLean County Circuit Court of attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm at a peace officer and aggravated assault at a police officer, according to McLean County Circuit Court records.
On Thursday, the Illinois State Police, which is handling the investigation as required by law, released an 11-minute video from one of the officers’ body cameras as well as the dash camera from a squad car.
A day after the shooting, state police said “one Chenoa Police Department and two ISP officers were involved in the shooting.” It’s not clear which officer’s camera was used but the sleeves of the man who is in the video are tan, which likely means it is a state trooper.
Hurst is slated to appear in court next week for his arraignment
Because he allegedly tried to kill a police officer, Hurst faces at least 20 and possibly up to 80 years in prison on the attempted murder counts if he’s convicted. An additional 20 years could be added on to the minimum because he’s accused of “personally discharging” a firearm.
The vehicle was spotted on Interstate 74 in Champaign County and followed to McLean County where it got off at an exit in Lexington at a Casey’s gas station.
Officers tracked the vehicle to McLean County where Joseph Martin Hernandez exited the vehicle and entered a Casey’s Gas station in Lexington. That’s when officers converged to take him and another person into custody.
Hurst, who was in the vehicle, allegedly pointed a gun at officers who were able to shoot first, striking him. Hurst was taken to an area hospital for treatment, according to the state police.
The other man, the state police said, was not injured and was taken into custody for further investigation.
