SOUTH LOS ANGELES, CA — Body-worn camera footage shows a tense confrontation between LAPD officers and 26-year-old Shamar Bennett, following a domestic-violence call to a South L.A. home last month.
Officers arrived after a 911 caller reported Bennett was allegedly hitting his girlfriend with a rifle and appeared suicidal. As police moved in, a child inside the residence could be heard shouting for help, saying “My mommy! My mama!” during the chaos .
The footage shows Bennett emerge from the home while holding a rifle. LAPD officers immediately open fire, shooting him in the leg. He survived the encounter, and was seen afterward commending the officer who shot him, saying “That was a good shot though… that was a good shot”.
Four individuals, including Bennett’s girlfriend and a child, were safely escorted from the residence. No other injuries were reported.
Authorities say the rifle Bennett carried fired metallic BB rounds, not live ammunition. He is now facing charges related to domestic violence and assault.
