MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A teen girl was shot in a park near Overton High School Thursday morning, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD).
An MPD spokesperson said that the girl was fighting with other people at Willow Road Park when a man in a dark-colored SUV pulled up and fired shots. Investigators found two shell casings at the scene.
Police said the girl suffered critical injuries in the shooting and that she was rushed to Regional One Health.
The shooting prompted a lockdown at nearby Overton High School. A spokesperson for the Memphis-Shelby County Schools District identified the injured girl as a previous Overton High student. According to the school district’s spokesperson, the girl was expelled from the school in 2023.
The MSCS spokesperson clarified that no students at the school were in danger and that the building was placed on lockdown while authorities carried out their investigation.
