Texas woman arrested after smuggling 25 illegal immigrants hidden in box truck

A 43-year-old Houston woman, Silvia Patricia Santamaria, was arrested on 25 counts of human smuggling after Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers discovered 25 undocumented immigrants hidden in a box truck during a traffic stop.

The incident began around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at a truck stop along Interstate 37 in George West, Texas.

A passerby reported a minor crash involving a white 2005 International box truck. When troopers interviewed the driver, Santamaria claimed she was transporting mattresses from Alton, Texas back to Houston.

DPS, with assistance from George West PD, searched the truck and found 25 immigrants cramped behind 30 mattresses and in a crawlspace, with no ventilation inside the cargo hold. Those detained included 12 men, 12 women and an 11-year-old child from countries including Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, India, Cuba, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.

Santamaria was arrested and subsequently booked into Live Oak County Jail on 25 counts of human smuggling. The migrants underwent medical evaluations and were transferred to U.S. Border Patrol custody for processing.
