Vallejo police shoot man who pointed BB gun at officers: bodycam

VALLEJO, Calif. — Newly released police video shows the moment officers shot and wounded a 24-year-old man who pointed what turned out to be a BB gun at them during an August 29 incident.

According to Vallejo police, Alexander Schumann jumped out of a gray SUV he’d been vandalizing, wearing a white track suit and black ski mask. As officers ordered him to show his hands, Schumann pointed what appeared to be a handgun before briefly raising his arms and turning away. Within seconds, two officers fired seven rounds, hitting him multiple times.

Schumann survived and was airlifted to a hospital. Police said the gun he had was a BB gun. He has since been charged with vandalism, brandishing a replica firearm, battery on a spouse, and resisting arrest.

The release of the video came during a public meeting at Bethel High School where residents — including Schumann’s father — questioned whether police properly handled the situation and were aware of his mental health crisis.
