Victim opens fire on men trying to rob him in Fairfax District

LOS ANGELES — Two men were shot when one of the victims opened fire on them during a brazen robbery in Fairfax District, police said.

The incident caught on surveillance video occurred Monday evening near the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Vista Street at around 7pm.

The video shows a man with a shopping bag and two women standing in a parking lot when a Dodge Avenger backs up near them.

The Los Angeles Police Department said that two suspects exited from the car and confronted the victim with a handgun in hand.

The victim ultimately produced a handgun and opened fire on them in self-defense, police said.

All parties involved immediately fled the scene

The two suspects who fled the scene on foot were apprehended by officers shortly after and suffered gunshot wounds to the legs.

Police identified the two would-be robbers as 22-year-old Nicholas Brown and Markeil Hayes, 28, both from Los Angeles.

Both suspects were already on parole and were booked for attempted robbery, according to the LAPD.

Investigators are still searching for the driver.
