Video catches moment Charlotte school bus struck by gunfire

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Surveillance footage released on Thursday captured the moment a Charlotte school bus was struck by gunfire earlier this week.

The heart-stopping video from inside the bus showed a bullet penetrating a window and students beginning to scream as the situation unfolded in real-time.

On Monday, Dec. 16, an alleged drug dispute led to a shooting on East W.T. Harris Boulevard near Albemarle Road. A school bus carrying students with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools was caught in the crossfire of that shooting, police reported.

Of the 30 or so students on the bus at the time of the shooting, two were treated for cuts caused by shattered glass, police reported Tuesday. It did not appear that any students were hit by actual gunfire.

Bail was denied on Thursday for the second man charged in connection with the shooting.

Paris Lewis-Bynum, 20, was denied bail during a court appearance on Thursday, Dec. 19. He was arrested Wednesday for alleged assault in connection with a shooting that unintentionally involved a school bus, officials said.

Authorities reported Tuesday that the school bus was not the intended target of the shooting. Rather, the bus got caught in the fire, police said.
