VIDEO: NMSU basketball player shoots UNM student dead in self-defense

ALBUQUERQUE — Newly released surveillance video shows the moment a NMSU basketball player shot an UNM student dead in self-defense in Albuquerque last month.

The video shows the November 19 attack on NMSU player, Mike Peake, which lead to 19-year-old UNM student Brandon Travis shot to death.

New Mexico State Police investigators said Travis conspired with two other UNM students, Jonathan Smith and an individual identified as “Eli”, and a 17-year-old girl to lure Peake onto campus.

Security footage shows Peake with a female outside the dorms at the campus before three people pull up behind Peake.

Travis can then be seen pointing a gun at Peake as the other two men were near Peake.

One man then hits Peake with a bat before Peake runs toward the parking lot.

Peake pulled out a weapon and fired it at Travis as he was running from Travis, who was shooting at Peake.

Travis was shot 4 times fell to the ground and died at the scene.

Peake suffered a gunshot wound to the leg that required several surgeries.

Footage further showed Peake walking up to a yellow Camaro after the shooting.

Peake reportedly met up with three individuals and placed items in the truck of the Camaro before it drove off.

The individuals were identified as NMSU basketball players Issa Muhammad, Anthony Roy, and Marchelus Avery.

All three were on the team.

Authorities said Peake is cooperating with the investigation and confessed that to giving the gun and an electronic tablet to Muhammad and Roy.

Peake has not been charged in the shooting.

The deadly shooting is said to have stemmed following a fight at a UNM versus NMSU football game on October 15 in Las Cruces.
