A former University of Illinois Chicago Hospital worker is facing charges after security and police body camera footage captured him allegedly threatening a patient with a loaded handgun in the hospital’s outpatient lobby.
Authorities say the incident happened on July 21, when Glenn Rhymes, then employed by third-party contractor Aramark, got into an altercation with a patient in the packed lobby of the UI Health Outpatient Care Center. Surveillance video shows Rhymes revealing a fully loaded firearm during the confrontation as someone nearby tries to calm him down.
Police body camera video shows officers locating and arresting Rhymes shortly afterward. In the footage, Rhymes admits to displaying the gun. Officers recovered the loaded weapon at the scene.
The hospital went into high alert following the incident. A university spokesperson confirmed no shots were fired and no injuries occurred but said new security measures have been implemented.
UIC officials also noted that Rhymes was allegedly wanted in connection to a separate double shooting the next day in South Austin, though Chicago police have not confirmed that link. Aramark has since terminated his employment.
Rhymes appeared in court Wednesday, telling the judge he is currently employed and plans to hire his own attorney. He is due back in court next month.
