LANCASTER, Calif. — The husband of a woman found dead in the Angeles National Forest was briefly detained in Peru before being released, authorities said.

33-year-old Sheylla Gutierrez was reported missing on Aug. 12. Her body was discovered days later, wrapped in fabric and dumped over an embankment in the forest.

Her husband, 36-year-old Jossimar Cabrera, flew to Peru with the couple’s three children after her disappearance. The children are now with Gutierrez’s grandparents in Peru.

Family members said Cabrera gave conflicting accounts of his wife’s whereabouts, including claims that she was taken by ICE, left with another man, or had suffered an accident. Surveillance video later surfaced showing him dragging a large object wrapped in fabric near their Lancaster home.

Investigators confirmed the material matched what Gutierrez’s body was found in.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detectives said they will present the case to the District Attorney’s office for murder charges and then begin the extradition process to bring Cabrera back to the U.S.

Gutierrez’s official cause of death remains under investigation.
