Video shows lion grab girl’s leg through fence at China zoo

CHINA — Video shows the moment a lion suddenly grabbed a young girl’s leg through a metal fence during a feeding incident at a zoo.

The incident happened at Zhongshan Park in Shantou, Guangdong Province, where a 10-year-old girl was reportedly allowed to feed the animal at close range. As she stood near the enclosure, the lion reached through the barrier and clamped onto her leg.

Staff immediately rushed in and managed to free the girl before the situation escalated further.

The child was taken to a hospital, where she was treated for minor leg injuries and given a rabies vaccination before being released later that evening.

An initial investigation found that a zookeeper had allowed visitors into a restricted area meant to keep a safe distance from the animals. The staff member has since been suspended.

The zoo has been temporarily closed as officials conduct a broader review of safety protocols and management practices.
