Video shows violent beating on CATS bus that left Charlotte man paralyzed
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Video from on board a CATS bus shows the confrontation and beating that left a homeless veteran paralyzed from the shoulders down.
Charlotte police said the incident happened March 6 as Mark Godfrey,64, argued with another passenger, who police later identified as 29-year-old Moses Early.
As the confrontation continues, the video appears to show Godfrey reach for Early’s bag. That’s when Early starts to repeatedly punch and stomp on Godfrey.
Angelia Adams said the attack left her brother with a broken neck.
Godfrey is being treated in a local hospital, but he’ll likely be a quadriplegic the rest of his life, Adams said.
Police arrested Early about a week later and charged him with attempted first degree murder, jail records show.
Adams watched the video for the first time Wednesday. She’s been visiting the hospital regularly since the incident, to visit with her brother.
“Horrifying, horrifying,” Adams said. “I just can’t believe that there was so many people on the bus that did nothing. Nobody stood up and tried to help him.”
Godfrey does not have any recollection of what happened, but wants to see the video, his sister said.
“He wants to know why he’s [in the hospital] and what happened to him and why the rest of his life is going to be the way it is.”
