Videos show bus crash at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – New videos have been released of a December 2023 of a crash involving two buses at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

The videos show perspectives from both buses and from a variety of cameras in each bus. One bus appeared to be carrying passengers. The other bus appeared to be an employee shuttle.

In the video from the passenger bus, the driver appears to start moving as the employee shuttle appears to pass, leading to what appears to be a scraping up against the passenger bus’s driver’s side. Moments later, the driver of the passenger bus appears to be trying to gain control of the vehicle, before hitting a railing and a column.

Violent lurching could be seen among the people in the passenger bus, with one appearing to suffer a facial injury. Screaming could also be heard from passengers.

In the video of the same incident from the employee shuttle, you can see the shuttle pass, but get briefly hit. Moments later, there appears to be a second hit, which rocks the passengers of the employee shuttle from their seats.

One person had to be taken to the hospital as a result of the crash.

The accident report from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police indicated that the driver of the passenger bus “stated that he had to stop to pick up a passenger and just as he started to move [the employee shuttle] passed him (on) the left side which resulted in the accident.”

“The driver of [the employee shuttle] stated [the passenger bus] was stopped in the middle lane while he was passing him on the left side. He started as soon as he passed him, he felt a bump in the rear of the vehicle. He slowed down to stop when [the passenger bus] collided with the column next to him,” the report also stated.
