Woman accused of setting Sacramento homeless woman on fire, kicking her before running away

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A woman is behind bars after allegedly setting a homeless woman on fire in South Sacramento.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and fire crews responded after a woman was set on fire around 9:30 p.m. on April 26. It happened in the area of 17th Avenue and Stockton Boulevard.

The victim, a 49-year-old homeless woman, was taken to the hospital with burns covering about a third of her body, including her face, torso, arms and back. She was intubated for several days, unable to speak.

In the meantime, deputies were able to identify several witnesses, including those who helped put the fire out. The suspect was identified as Jacqueline Popaibarra.

Deputies said she drove to where the victim set up a spot to sleep, started an argument, threw an unknown liquid on her and set her on fire. Deputies believed the liquid was possibly a fire accelerant.

As bystanders tried to put the fire out, Popaibarra allegedly started kicking the victim before taking off.

Deputies were able to speak with the victim Tuesday, who identified Popaibarra as her attacker.

Popaibarra was already arrested on an unrelated robbery charge. She was booked Tuesday for felony charges in connection to the attack.
