The Arizona Department of Public Safety identified the Tucson woman who was fatally shot by a state trooper on the side of a highway on April 4.
At around 12 p.m., a state trooper was patrolling the area of westbound Interstate 10 near Park Avenue, according to DPS. The trooper saw Robin Rae Budelli, 41, walking on the right shoulder and pulled over.
“I-10 is a controlled access highway and pedestrians are restricted in this area,” DPS said on April 11.
According to DPS, Budelli pulled a “large, butcher-style knife” out of her purse shortly after the trooper exited the vehicle. She raised the knife above her head and charged at the trooper.
The trooper shot Budelli, then called for medical assistance. DPS said she was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The state trooper was not injured and the DPS Major Incident Division took over the investigation.
