Woman engulfed in flames after cartel arson attack on OXXO store in Mexico

MEXICO — A violent cartel retaliation has left civilians caught in the middle after an OXXO convenience store was set on fire with employees still inside, triggering chaos and panic.

The attack happened in Purísima del Rincón, Guanajuato, where suspected CJNG gunmen allegedly carried out an arson assault following the reported death of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.”

Viral video from the scene shows one of the store employees running outside as flames engulf her clothing. Bystanders rushed in to help, using whatever they could to put out the fire before emergency crews arrived.

The woman suffered burns to approximately 10% of her body, according to initial reports.

Authorities and firefighters responded to contain the blaze and secure the area. Due to the risk of further violence, officials issued an urgent warning for residents to avoid the area and remain indoors.

The incident is part of a broader wave of violence linked to cartel retaliation for the death of El Mencho, with attacks targeting public spaces and businesses. Officials continue operations to locate those responsible as tensions remain high.
