Woman hospitalized after running into moving traffic in Mexico suicide attempt
A young woman was seriously injured after running into moving traffic in an apparent suicide attempt on Paseo de los Leones in Monterrey, Mexico, authorities said.
The incident happened near the Cumbres Tercer Sector neighborhood at the intersection with Termópilas Street, where emergency responders and police rushed to the scene after multiple drivers reported the situation.
Security camera footage and videos recorded by witnesses show the woman initially standing along the side of the avenue before suddenly running into the high-speed traffic lanes. A white car traveling within the speed limit struck her, throwing her several feet onto the pavement.
Authorities detained the driver temporarily as part of the investigation, though officials indicated the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
Video from other angles shows a police officer already present and attempting to protect the woman by stopping traffic on a nearby lane. Investigators said the officer had been trying to talk to her moments before she ran into the roadway.
Preliminary information suggests the incident was related to a mental health crisis rather than a typical traffic accident. Officials said the woman had been traveling with her parents before leaving the vehicle and running into traffic. Her family had called emergency services shortly before the collision.
Red Cross paramedics provided first aid at the scene before transporting the woman to a local hospital. Authorities said she suffered severe injuries and remains in critical condition.
Police secured the area while investigators documented the scene and reviewed video evidence.
