Woman killed in Chicago ambush as gunmen spray car with baby inside

CHICAGO — A woman was killed in a violent daytime ambush in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood after multiple gunmen swarmed a car and opened fire while a baby sat in the back seat.

The shooting happened shortly after 1:20 p.m. on South May Street. Police say a 26-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man were inside a white vehicle when several suspects ran up and began shooting at close range.

Footage circulating online shows the attackers firing repeatedly into the car before running off. Moments later, the shooters returned in a red Alfa Romeo and unleashed another burst of gunfire into the same vehicle before fleeing the area.

The woman suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she later died. The man was struck in the arm and lower body and transported to a different hospital, where he is expected to survive.

A baby in the back seat was not physically injured. A witness who recorded the video said the child was crying after the attack and appeared to be holding a lollipop while first responders arrived.

After the shooting, the victims’ car rolled forward and crashed into a parked van. The van’s driver declined medical treatment.

The attack unfolded less than a block from St. Sabina Parish, a church known for decades of anti-violence activism in the community.

No suspects have been arrested. Detectives say the shooting was targeted and are reviewing video and witness accounts as the investigation continues.
